Portrait of Oscar I Royal Prince of Sweden and Norway.
Canvas
78 x 64 cm.
Gilded stuccoed wood palmettes frame with crown on cushion and large rectangular cartel at bottom center "Donated by S.A.R Mr Prince Oscar, Prince Royal of Sweden and Norwège. to Mr Louis Lemoine his former teacher in May 1827".
Provenance: family by descent
OSCAR I (Paris 1799 - Stockholm 1859), king in 1844 following his father Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte (1763-1844), king of Sweden in 1818 as Charles XIV Jean and of Norway as Charles III Jean.
Louis LEMOINE (Pontorson 1768- Versailles 1853). Prefect. Former tutor to young Prince Oscar, in France, then in Sweden. He was dismissed in 1812 when Bernadotte, King of Sweden, became Russia's official ally. Louis Lemoine wrote to his wife: "I had raised him with my heart, I had succeeded. He is about to pass into other hands; may he be happy! His happiness will compensate me for everything else...". Oscar I's Queen Mother said of him: "A French man of letters and culture who, judging by the education he gave his pupil, must possess great qualities," an opinion she would later revise when Lemoine was replaced by a Swedish tutor. Decorated with the Order of Seraphim. He wrote "Abrégé de l'Histoire de Suède" (1844 - 2 volumes).
Reference: a similar portrait is held in the Swedish National Collections at Roserbergs Castle (80.5 x 64.5 cm), dated 1825. Westin, one of the official painters of the Swedish Court at the time, also portrayed the Bernadotte family (Charles XIV Jean) in full 1837.
