Vietnam, 19th century. Rectangular black lacquered wood box - Lot 135
Vietnam, 19th century. Rectangular black lacquered wood box with mother-of-pearl inlaid decoration depicting birds, flowers, trees and rocks in four-lobed cartouches on a background paved with small hexagons of florets, the inside of the lid adorned with two Fô dogs playing with a rubbed ball; chased metal hinges and lock. Vietnam, 19th century. Dim. 10.2 x 24 x 12 cm (Minor accidents) Note: a box with a very similar exterior design is in the Musée de Grenoble-J.L. Lacroix. It was regularly donated to the museum by Leon de Beylié (1849-1910), a career soldier and archaeologist who visited Indochina several times between 1884 and 1910, and who is said to have brought it back at the end of the 19th century. Accounts by Beylié's contemporaries mention the "rue des incrusteurs" (which became rue Paul Bert) in Hanoi, where craftsmen made all kinds of objects from wood inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Expert: CABINET ANSAS PAPILLON et de LERY. Mme Anne Papillon d'Alton - 3 rue Geoffroy-Marie 75009 Paris - 01 45 65 48 19
