Stéphane PINTA - 69 rue Sainte-Anne 75002 Paris - 01 47 03 48 78 PAINTINGS ON VIEW AT THE EXPERT'S RUE SAINTE-ANNE UNTIL WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6 History and situation: after the Treaty of Nanking (first Opium War), France, Great Britain, the United States and the Netherlands had trading posts in China in the 19th century, and the ships shown here fly the flags of these various countries. In addition to the Western ships in Whampoa Bay, seen from Dane Island (at the entrance to the Pearl River, with the Pazhou Pagoda in the center), ships used to transport goods, such as junks, sampans and tankas, are depicted. Here, the European vessels are three-masted sailing ships modeled on those used by Dumont d'Urville (l'Astrolabe). These two views are typical of the Anglo-Chinese schools of the 19th century (China Trade Paintings) and are like a snapshot of the period.
