TROYES SCHOOL circa 1530-1540 - Lot 77
TROYES SCHOOL circa 1530-1540
Adoration of the Magi; figure of a Dominican saint on reverse
Three-part panel painted on two sides
Height: 78 cm
Width : 68 cm
Cracks and missing parts
Wide oak frame
Our painting was the side panel of an altarpiece. It shows the synthesis of northern Romanesque elements and Italian Renaissance influence that characterized the 16th-century Trojan school. The town was an artistic melting pot where artists of different origins met.
The stacking of figures reveals a knowledge of Luca Penni's engravings, while the foreground of the Adoration shows Raphael's monumental compositions.
The recto and verso probably belong to two different hands, but not necessarily chronologically distant. It is their place and function in the altarpiece ("grisaille" more static on the reverse) that differ rather than their date.
