School of Troyes around 1530-1540 - Lot 30
School of Troyes around 1530-1540 Adoration of the Magi; figure of a Dominican saint on the reverse Panel in three parts painted on two sides Height : 78 cm Width : 68 cm Cracks and missing parts Large oak frame Our painting was a side panel of an altarpiece. We can see the synthesis that characterizes the Trojan school of the 16th century between northern Romanist elements and the influence of the Italian Renaissance. This city was an artistic melting pot where artists of different origins met. The stacking of the figures shows the knowledge of Luca Penni's engravings, and the foreground of the Adoration that of Raphael's monumental compositions. The front and back are probably in the hands of two different artists, but not necessarily chronologically distant. It is their place and function in the altarpiece ("grisaille" more static on the reverse) that differ rather than their date.
