CRIME - LAW] DE DAMHOUDER (Josse). La Practique et enchiridi - Lot 3
CRIME - LAW] DE DAMHOUDER (Josse). Louvain, Etienne VVauters [Wauters] and Jehan Bathen, 1555. In-4° 18th century calf, sod 5 nerves, caissons decorated with fleurons, red edges. Handwritten bookplate on the title "Gustave Bressolles docteur en droit". Rare French edition of this famous manual of criminal law, composed by the Flemish jurisconsult Josse de Damhouder (1507-1581). Sought after because of its illustrations which include 56 woodcuts. These are particularly interesting in terms of costume, furnishings and mores of the sixteenth century, in frames bordered with fruit or terms in the wake of Hugues Sambin's representations. Some of them have been considered licentious (paillardise p. 196, fornication p. 199, incest p. 201). This edition Gustave BRESSOLLES (1816-1892), a doctor of law from the faculty of Toulouse in 1836, took the oath of lawyer and then became a teacher, appointed in 1844 (Toulouse), named in 1850 professor of civil law, taught in Toulouse until his retirement in 1887. With other colleagues from Toulouse, he formed what has been called the "Toulouse School", opening up legal science to new methods. He was twice president of the Academy of Legislation of Toulouse.
